Improve concentration at work

Improve concentration at work – Did you know that when you are interrupted in the middle of a task, it takes between 20 and 30 minutes to regain your concentration?
Coworking Neuchâtel tells you the secrets of concentration and offers you some tools to stay focused at work.

Why staying focused?

This may seem like a trivial question, but let’s dwell for a moment on what is called the flow state. Flow is the psychological state we reach when we are at the height of our concentration, and when our commitment and satisfaction are at their maximum. It is during this time that we do our best work.

What can you do to Improve concentration at work?

There are a number of techniques for staying focused at work.

Work by “blocks of time”
In order to improve your productivity and at the same time your concentration, you can divide your tasks into “blocks of time”. One of the techniques to do this is the Pomodoro Technique, which consists of compartmentalizing your work time into 25-minute periods followed by a 5-minute break.

Take real breaks every 90 minutes
Concentration decreases by half after 90 minutes. Thus, in order to remain concentrated, it is sometimes necessary to take a break. Every 90 minutes, if possible, disconnect completely from your work for about 15 minutes. At Coworking Neuchâtel we meet several times a day to enjoy breaks together. A change of scenery guaranteed!

Notebook
If an idea crosses your mind and distracts you during the completion of a task, use a notebook. Write down the idea and immediately return to your task. You will then be able to take care of the idea properly.

Plan
To improve concentration at work and reduce external distractions, you can define periods during which you make yourself available. If they are not urgent, answer calls within a certain period of time and indicate this to people who wish to contact you. Also, let your employees know that you are only available during specific times.

Isolate yourself from noise
Two possibilities are available to you. If your workplace allows you to do so, isolate yourself. If not, you can always wear headphones. Do not worry if you cannot concentrate listening to music, some sites offer soundtracks of ambient noise, like Coffitivity. At Coworking Neuchâtel you will find two telephone booths and multiple spaces to isolate yourself when necessary (designed by our partner Kinnarps).

If you have any questions about the Solo soundproof booth, please do not hesitate to contact Kinnarps Geneva (head office): 022 300 55 44 or Kinnarps Neuchâtel:
032 552 05 04.

Not all solutions presented are applicable at all times. However, we hope that they will give you tips on how to stay focused at work longer.

Some tools?

Here are a few tools to help you reach your goal and improve concentration at work.

  • Freedom (paid) and block site (free): to block access to sites that distract you (social media for example).
  • Forest: an app that integrates pomodoro and blocksite. Set the time period during which the app prevents you from accessing distractions. In addition, for each completed period you plant a tree.
  • Coffivity: to listen to the best ambient sounds.

There are still hundreds of similar apps, you are free to choose the one that suits you best to improve concentration at work.
